Broken Calculator

Usually, the calculator gives you the answer to an equation. However, this calculator is broken!

Your job is to come up with five equations that all equal the target number. You can use multiplication, division, addition, or subtraction! You’ll earn points for each new equation that you create. You can use simple operations or write in equations with multiple addends and subtrahends. It’s up to you!

This free online math game helps students work through many skills. It builds fluency in operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Plus, children must use flexible thinking and a problem-solving attitude to successfully complete the task.

Project the broken calculator to use it with the whole class or have students work with it in small groups or individually. Consider offering students scrap paper or a math journal so that they can work through their equations. Or, use manipulatives like base ten blocks so that students can model possible equations.

Shake and Spill

Have you ever seen such a crazy factory? This fun factory brings whimsical fun to addition facts practice.

How does it work? Simply select a number from 1 to 10 and watch the factory get to work. After beeping, flashing, and honking, the factory will produce a set of red and yellow counters. Plus, you’ll see an addition equation that needs to be filled in. Sort and rearrange the counters by clicking and dragging them. Finally, fill in the equation by clicking and dragging numbers to the empty spaces. The game will help students along the way by not allowing incorrect numbers to be placed in the equation. When the correct equation is achieved, students get positive feedback.

During this process, the concept of addends is reinforced. Students can use one addend to represent the yellow counters and the other to represent the red counters. The sum is represented by all of the counters together. Thanks to the counters, each equation is modeled, giving students a concrete understanding of addition.

Off Frog

Jump, little frog, jump! Help these frogs jump into the pond before they reach the dotted line. Then, count how many frogs jumped away.

To play the virtual subtraction game, click on the frogs and they’ll jump into the water. Then, answer the question. Pick the number that shows how many frogs jumped into the water.

In this ribbeting online subtraction game, children practice the concept of subtraction or “taking away.” The lily pads also create a nice example of a five-frame. The visualization of the frogs disappearing helps reinforce how subtraction works. Whether you’re introducing the concept of subtraction or your students are more advanced, you can use this fun game to encourage learning. Here are a few activities to try with the game:

  • Ask students to fill in a five-frame each time they play.
  • Ask children to write out a subtraction sentence to represent the game.
  • Ask students to make up their own game using a ten-frame instead of a five-frame. Children can cut out small paper frogs and lily pads or use other animals to create their game.

Telling Time

The little aviator needs help! He’s not sure what time his flight leaves. Help him by clicking on the correct digital time button so that he can take off!

Our online telling time game allows teachers and parents to adjust the controls as children improve their skills. When opening the game, on the left-hand side, you can choose the skills students practice. For example, choosing the “hour” box will only ask students to tell time on an analog clock by the hour. As students advance, they can tell time with greater precision, from the half hour down to the minute. On the right-hand side, choose how the clock will appear and whether or not to show the digital clocks using a 12-hour or 24-hour format. You can also choose to show or hide the minute numbers on the clock. Students will improve their telling time skills by playing this fun game! Encourage students to hide the minute numbers for a greater challenge.

Learning to tell time on an analog clock may seem irrelevant in today’s digital age. However, learning this skill also supports the understanding of fractions and helps students master skills like skip counting by fives. Plus, an analog clock shows time passing more visually, as the minute hand goes around the clock over the course of one hour, or as the hour hand slowly moves from one number to the next. Finally, the mental agility needed to put it all together builds a child’s concentration and perseverance.
